ANWAR CHITRAKAR

Early Life
Anwar Chitrakar is a patua artist who was trained by his father Amar Chitrakar in the 19th century Kalighat style of painting.
In West Bengal, patuas (village artists) painted scroll paintings, illustrating stories of Krishna, Rama, and other Indian gods and mythological characters.
These scrolls are not made for sale but to equip the artists in their role as wandering minstrels. Patuas travel from village to village, gathering an audience, displaying their scrolls and reciting their stories.

His Style
In keeping with the old Patua traditions, Anwar continues the use natural colours and materials. He uses turmeric and marigold to create yellow and orance pigments, black colour is made from the soot of kerosene lamps similarly, other colours are made from plant and nature based materials.
While retaining his traditional roots as a pata artist, Anwar has also adopted contempoary practices to develop his own individualistic style.

His Work
Traditional myths and fables along with the depiction of every day life peppered with satirical humour form the basis of Anwar’s work.
